Alentejo’s cuisine is based on simple ingredients,
seasoned with a profusion of herbs, garlic, olive oil and home-made red pepper paste. Besides several wild herbs, fresh coriander is used liberally to flavour pork – often from free range animals – and the various kinds of ‘açordas’ the traditional bread soups and stews.
Local specialities also include different lamb and mutton dishes, as well as the very sweet and substantial desserts and pastries. Many of them have their origins in convents and are mainly made of sugar, eggs (lots of eggs), almonds and often cinnamon.
The region is full of vineyards and the wines of Alentejo are considered to be amongst the best in Portugal.
In Vila Nova da Baronia and nearby you will find a number of small, inexpensive restaurants offering good regional food.
